Update on latest initiatives for avian influenza prevention and control
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), through their technical programmes and their joint Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs),are organizing the se cond session of the two-part GF-TADs webinar series on avian influenza on Thursday, 5 February 2026, from 13:00 to 14:30 CET.
Avian influenza remains a major global challenge for poultry production, trade, wildlife, livelihoods and public health. The spread of avian influenza into new geographic regions and host species in recent years, alongside zoonotic infections in humans, demonstrates its increased risks and potential to cause a pandemic. This emphasizes the need to strengthen preparedness, enhance surveillance systems, and promote coordinated action across sectors, under a One Health approach.
Following the first webinar, which provided an overview of the global and regional HPAI situation, this second session will spotlight the latest initiatives from FAO, WOAH, and the FAO/WOAH Network of Expertise on Animal Influenza (OFFLU). This includes the FAO/WOAH Global HPAI Strategy, key outcomes from the FAO Global Dialogue on HPAI held in Brazil, among other activities, practical tools and technical guidance that can support countries in reducing the threats and impacts posed by avian influenza.
