14th GF-TADs Global Steering Committee (GSC14) - Third session
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) co-organized the 14th Global Steering Committee Meeting (GSC14) of the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs) as a hybrid event. The meeting was conducted across three sessions, with two virtual meetings on April 30 and May 7, closing in an in-person gathering at the Maison de la Chimie in Paris on May 17, bringing together approximately 160 participants.
Marking GF-TADs' 20th anniversary, the meeting was structured into three strategic sessions. The first session focused on taking stock and setting direction, featuring presentations from Dr Monique Eloit (DG of WOAH) and Dr Thanawat Tiensin (NSA Director and Chief Veterinarian at FAO), highlighting achievements including rinderpest control progress and FAO's expanded field presence across 382 livestock projects in 108 countries. Disease-specific discussions covered progress and challenges in controlling rinderpest, FMD, PPR, and ASF, along with regional perspectives on vaccine manufacturing and disease control.
The second session deepened the dialogue through three parallel panels addressing critical aspects: representation in governance structures, measuring and sharing progress, and increasing efficiency and impact. A pre-meeting stakeholder survey revealed about 70% satisfaction with current governance structures, while identifying areas for enhancement in monitoring and resource mobilization.
The final session culminated in the launch of the new global strategy for the prevention and control of high pathogenicity avian influenza (2024–2033), to be published shortly. The meeting emphasised on clear timelines for implementation governance proposals, regional strategy contextualization, and development of resource mobilization strategies. The shift from tripartite to quadripartite collaboration, coupled with strengthened global-regional-national coordination, positions GF-TADs to address future challenges effectively.
